International Colour Registry is a trading name of IDAS Ltd

We hope our colour certificates spread some much-needed joy, and we have tried hard to make everything on this site simple, honest and fun to use. We also take our legal and moral obligations seriously, so what follows are our formal terms of sale.
These terms apply to everything you buy from us. Please read them before you order. By ticking the box at checkout you are agreeing to them, and to our privacy notice and our cancellation policy, which are part of them.
We have tried to write them in ordinary English rather than legal language, and to say the awkward parts out loud rather than bury them. Nothing here takes away your legal rights.
What we do not collect
Most companies collect whatever they can and work out later what it might be worth. We would rather do the opposite, and say so at the start rather than somewhere near the end.
We collect what is needed to make your certificate, deliver it, answer you afterwards, and stop it being misused. That is the whole of it.
We never ask for a date. Not your birthday, not an anniversary, not the date of anything. If you add a gift card we ask which occasion it is for, because the card is made for that occasion, and that is the only thing it is used for. It is not kept to remind you next year, and nothing on this site will ever write to you about a date, because we do not have one.
This site uses no cookies. We do not build a profile of you. We do not run advertising or analytics trackers. We do not buy information about you from anybody, and we do not sell information about you to anybody.
Sections 1 to 7 list everything we do hold, why we are allowed to hold it, and how long we keep it. If we ever want to collect something new it goes on that list with its purpose, and the change is dated at the top of this page. We will not quietly start collecting something under wording that was already there.
If somebody sent you a certificate, section 7 is written for you.
One exception, stated rather than left to be found. If IDAS Ltd is ever sold, or the register is passed to somebody else to run, the register and its records go with it and whoever takes it on is bound by this same notice. What we will not do, ever, is sell your details on their own, as a list, to anybody.
Your information
These sections are the privacy notice. They are part of these terms rather than a separate document, so that a cross-reference between the two cannot quietly stop being true.
1. Your information, in full
IDAS Ltd is the data controller for everything described here. Registered office: 92 Cobden Avenue, Southampton, SO18 1FS, United Kingdom. Company number 02792217. Write to Support@InternationalColourRegistry.com about anything in these sections.
The short version is at the top of this page, under What we do not collect. This is the same thing said properly.
2. What we collect and why
- Your email address — to send the certificate and the receipt, and to answer you. To perform the contract.
- The recipient's name and email address, if you are sending a gift and want it to go to them, so that we can deliver it. If you give us somebody else's email address you are confirming that they are content to receive it. To perform the contract.
- The colour or colours, or the wavelength, the name you chose, the name it is registered to, the name you give as the sender, and any words you asked us to include. This is the thing you are buying. To perform the contract.
- Your postal address, if you order anything printed. To perform the contract.
- Any photograph you upload, to put on the certificate. To perform the contract.
- Your gift card, if you asked for one: the occasion and the words you chose. Never a date. To perform the contract.
- Any discount code or partner reference used with your order, so that we can apply the offer and, where an organisation introduced the order, credit them for it. To perform the contract, and our legitimate interest in running our offers.
- Your country, worked out from your browser's time zone and confirmed by your billing or posting address, so that we show the right currency and price and can tell you before checkout if we do not sell where you are. To perform the contract.
- Who paid: the billing name and address, and the card's brand, its last four digits, and a fingerprint our payment provider gives us that identifies the same card again without revealing its number. Our legitimate interests in protecting the people our certificates are sent to, and in dealing with disputes and legal claims.
- A record of checkout: what you were shown and agreed to, including the version of these terms, the date and time, the internet address the order came from, and the browser it was placed with. Legal obligation, and our legitimate interests in answering a dispute honestly and in dealing with misuse.
- A fingerprint of your certificate: a short code worked out from the exact file we issued. It lets us tell whether a copy somebody shows us is exactly what we issued or has been changed. It cannot be turned back into the certificate or the photograph. Our legitimate interests in protecting the people our certificates are sent to, and in dealing with disputes and legal claims.
- Reports of misuse, if anybody makes one: what was reported, the reporter's name and email address if they give them, and the internet address and browser the report came from. Our legitimate interests in dealing with misuse and with legal claims.
- Sales records. Legal obligation — HMRC.
That is the complete list. There is nothing else, and nothing collected for a purpose we have not named.
We never see or store your card number. Our payment provider handles payment and holds that information. What we hold about the card is set out above and nothing more.
No cookies. This site does not set cookies. While you have the page open, your browser holds a note of the order you are placing, so that the confirmation page can show you what you ordered; it is cleared when you close the tab, and it never leaves your device. When you pay, you do so through our payment provider, which may use its own to protect against fraud. Those are the provider's, not ours, and they are not used for advertising.
3. What is public
The register is public, and that is the point of it. Every new entry is checked by a person before it appears, so an entry may not be visible straight away.
- Public, and findable through a search engine: the name of the colour, its value or values, the registration number, the date, and the name it is registered to.
- Public on the entry page but not part of what a search engine indexes: any words of your own. They are shown to somebody who opens the entry. They are not searchable, and searching this register will never match them.
- Never public: email addresses, postal addresses, who paid and how, the sender's name, your gift card, and your photograph. The photograph appears only on the certificate. A picture of the certificate can be seen on the check page of our website, but only by somebody who enters both its registration number and the order reference from the email it came with.
While a report of misuse is looked into, an entry may show its number only. Section 29 explains anonymity and removal, which are free and available at any time.
4. Who else sees it
- Our payment provider — to take payment.
- Our email provider — to deliver certificates, receipts and replies.
- The company that hosts our website — because the site and its records run on its servers.
- Our own email records — a copy of every email we send about an order, including the certificate, is kept in our own mailboxes, hosted in the United Kingdom, so that we can answer you.
- A print partner, if we use one for your order — name and postal address only, and only if you ordered something printed.
- Our accountant, and HMRC — sales records, as the law requires.
- The police, and courts — the records of an order, when the police ask for them in connection with a crime, or when a court orders us to provide them. Section 26 explains.
We name categories rather than companies so that changing a supplier does not require a new version of your contract. We will tell you the current ones if you ask.
We hold your information in the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area. Some of our providers, our payment provider in particular, may process it in other countries. Where that happens it is covered by the United Kingdom's approved safeguards for international transfers.
We do not sell your information to anybody. The one exception is set out at the top of this page.
5. How long we keep it
- The register entry — for as long as the register runs. Section 36 explains exactly what that means.
- Your certificate, your postal address, the billing name and address, and our email copies of your order — 60 days from the day your order is sent: the day it is posted if you ordered anything printed, otherwise the day the certificate is emailed. Then they are deleted. Your photograph is not kept on its own; it exists only inside the certificate, so it goes with it. After that we no longer hold the certificate: to order a further printed copy, reply to your certificate email with the PDF attached. Please keep your own copy of the certificate we email you. We may send a reminder before that date as a courtesy, but we do not undertake to, so please do not rely on one. Ask us sooner and we delete sooner.
- Sales and tax records, the checkout record, the card's brand, last four digits and fingerprint, and the certificate's fingerprint — six years after the end of the tax year, as HMRC requires of sales records.
- Reports of misuse — six years after the report is closed.
- An unpaid order that was never completed — deleted within a few days, along with any photograph uploaded with it.
- Your country — kept on its own for longer, because it records which market the sale belonged to and our tax position depends on it. A country by itself identifies nobody.
The one exception. If an order has been reported for misuse, or its records are needed to establish, exercise or defend a legal claim, everything held for that order is kept past these dates until the matter is closed, and then deleted on the timetable above.
6. Your rights over your information
You can ask us for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, object to our using it, or ask for it in a portable format. Email Support@InternationalColourRegistry.com. There is nothing to pay, and the law gives us one month.
Where the law allows us to keep something you have asked us to delete — sales records HMRC requires, or the records of an order reported for misuse — we will tell you what we are keeping and why.
There is no copy of your name anywhere we cannot delete it from. If you ask us to remove or anonymise your entry, it is removed or anonymised completely.
If you are not happy with how we have handled your information you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, or telephone 0303 123 1113.
This site is not intended for children, and you must be 18 or over to buy from us. We do not knowingly collect information about children.
7. If somebody sent you a certificate
If you received a certificate from somebody else, you did not give us your details; they did. This section tells you what we hold about you and what you can do about it.
What we hold. The name the colour is registered to, which may be yours; your email address, if the certificate was sent to you; your postal address, if a printed copy was posted to you; and any words the sender wrote to you.
Why. To deliver a gift somebody chose to send you, and to keep the register. That is our legitimate interest, and theirs, in a gift reaching the person it was meant for.
How long. The same as for the buyer, in section 5: your email and postal addresses go after 60 days; the register entry stays.
Who sent it. The sender's name on a gift is the name the buyer gave us. We do not check it. We know who paid, and that is what we act on if something is wrong.
What you can do, free and at any time:
- have an entry registered in your name shown anonymously, or removed from the public register altogether (section 29);
- ask us never to send anything to your email address again — we will not, and any later gift addressed to you is not sent;
- check that a certificate is genuine, or report misuse, through the check page on our website (section 26);
- use any of the rights in section 6.
Write to Support@InternationalColourRegistry.com, quoting the registration number from the certificate.
The agreement
8. Who you are buying from
International Colour Registry is a trading name of IDAS Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, company number 02792217. Our registered office is 92 Cobden Avenue, Southampton, SO18 1FS, United Kingdom.
Email: Support@InternationalColourRegistry.com
A person reads every email and replies as quickly as they can. We would rather answer properly than promise a deadline we might miss in a bad week.
Your contract is with IDAS Ltd, wherever you are and whatever you are buying. We run the register, we produce your certificate, we hold your registration and we answer your emails.
Payment is taken for us by a third-party payment provider. That provider handles your card details and never gives them to us. It does not become the seller and you do not have a second contract to keep track of.
Whatever has gone wrong, please contact us first. We will resolve it or we will refund it.
On your bank or card statement the payment will appear under a name that identifies the International Colour Registry. If you do not recognise a charge, please email us before contacting your bank.
9. What you are buying
You are buying an entry in a private register that we maintain, a certificate recording it, and a public page showing it. The entry records the exact value of one colour, or of a set of two or three colours, or a wavelength, together with the name you choose and the name it is registered to.
The certificate is emailed as a PDF. If you order printed copies, they are printed on high-quality photographic paper and posted.
There is no renewal fee. Section 36 explains how long a registration lasts.
This is a novelty gift and nothing more.
It gives you no legal, commercial or scientific rights over any colour. It is not a trade mark, a copyright, a design right or any other form of property. It does not stop anybody else using that colour, or that name, for anything at all. It has no effect on any trade mark, design right, colour matching system or industry standard, and we are not connected with, endorsed by or affiliated to any standards body, paint manufacturer or colour system provider.
We would much rather say this plainly before you buy than have you find out afterwards.
10. Colours and combinations
A registration is one colour, or a combination of two or three colours registered together as a single entry. Three is the most a registration can hold.
Each colour, and each combination, is registered once and once only. A single colour is unique among single colours. A combination is unique among combinations, and it is unique as a set: the order does not matter, so teal and black is the same combination as black and teal. Adding or taking away a colour makes a different combination.
Single colours and combinations are registered separately from each other. Registering a combination does not take its colours off the market as single colours, and a colour that somebody has registered on its own can still appear in somebody else's combination.
Some colours are sold only on their own, at their own price, and cannot be part of a combination. The website tells you when a colour is one of these. Wavelengths cannot be combined, either with each other or with colours.
11. Making a registration unique
Because every registration must be unique, the colour or combination you choose may already be taken. When that happens we may adjust one or more of the colours by a small amount so that your registration is unique. Which colour is adjusted, and how, is our choice, and we keep the change as small as we reasonably can.
You will always see the final values before you pay. What you pay for is what is registered.
Very occasionally the clash only appears after you have paid, for example when two people buy the same colour at the same moment. If that happens we will either refund you in full straight away, or make the adjustment, tell you exactly what changed, and offer you a full refund if you would rather not keep it.
We cannot hold a colour for you while you are paying. Until your order is confirmed, somebody else may register it first.
12. The Impossible Range
A wavelength registration records a name against a wavelength. It is not a registration of the wavelength itself. 589.3 nanometres is a physical constant. Nobody can own it, we do not claim to, and buying a registration gives you no rights over it of any kind. What you are buying is an entry in our register, a certificate, and a page recording that entry — exactly as with a colour.
"Impossible" and "cannot be reproduced" mean outside the range a screen or a commercial press can reproduce. They do not mean a colour has been invented. No colour on this site is new.
The range runs from 400.0 to 700.0 nanometres in tenths: 3,001 possible registrations, of which the Registrar holds 44 — the 31 round tens from 400 to 700, and 13 named spectral lines. That leaves 2,957.
A wavelength registration is delivered by email. In the United Kingdom a boxed edition is also offered, as a separate option at its own price. Outside the United Kingdom no boxed edition is offered.
A wavelength registration lasts in the same way as a colour registration, set out in section 36.
13. Colours we hold back
A small number of colour values are reserved by the Registrar and are never sold. The colour wheel and picker will not come to rest on a reserved value, so you cannot buy one by accident. The 44 wavelengths in section 12 are reserved in the same way.
14. Prices, currency and tax
Every price is shown on the website, and can be seen without buying anything or creating an account. The price that applies to your order is the one shown before you pay, after any discount code you have used.
Prices are shown in the currency of your market and are the amount you will be charged. Your own bank may charge you a fee for a payment in a foreign currency, which is a matter between you and them.
The price of printing and posting depends on where the item is posted to, not where you are. A printed certificate sent to the United Kingdom is priced as a United Kingdom delivery, whoever orders it and wherever they are.
No VAT is charged, because IDAS Ltd is not currently registered for VAT. If that changes, prices and the way tax is shown will change with it, and the change will be dated at the top of this page.
The price you see is the price you pay, and we add nothing at the end. Where a sales tax or equivalent is due in your country and we are required to collect it, it is included in the price shown. Section 19 explains the one thing that can be charged separately by somebody else: import duty on a printed item sent across a border.
If we have made an obvious pricing mistake and you could reasonably have been expected to notice it, we do not have to supply at that price. We will tell you and give you the choice of paying the right price or cancelling for a full refund.
15. Discounts and promotions
From time to time we may offer discount codes, special prices, free extra copies or free certificates. Each offer comes with its own conditions — what it covers, who can use it and when it ends — and those are shown with the offer. Where an offer's conditions and these terms differ, the offer's conditions apply to that offer.
Unless an offer says otherwise: one code can be used per order; a code has no cash value and cannot be exchanged for money; and a code cannot be added to an order after it has been paid for.
We may change or end an offer at any time, but never for an order already placed.
A discounted order is otherwise the same as any other. If it is cancelled or refunded, we refund what you actually paid.
Giveaways. Anything we give away is a certificate or a printed copy, and it is covered by these terms in the same way as one that was paid for. If a giveaway is ever decided by chance, entering it is free.
Organisations we work with. Some offers come through clubs, businesses and other organisations, and we may pay an organisation for orders it introduces. That never adds anything to the price you pay.
No false deadlines or prices. We do not show a "was" price that was never charged, or a deadline that is not real.
16. Payment
Payments are taken by a third-party payment provider, using the payment methods it offers at checkout. We never see or store your full card number, and which provider we use may change without any change to these terms or to your contract with us.
You must be 18 or over to buy from us.
We take payment when you place your order. If a payment fails or is reversed, your registration may be suspended until it is settled.
17. How the contract is made
Placing an order is an offer to buy. We accept that offer, and the contract is made, when we send you an order confirmation email.
Your certificate and your register entry follow that confirmation. Section 11 explains what happens if your colour or combination turns out to be taken after you have paid. Section 26 explains when we may hold or cancel an order. If we cannot register what you ordered for any other reason — because the name falls under section 21, for example — we will tell you and refund you in full.
There is one contract and it is with us. Our payment provider accepting your card is not a separate agreement and does not change any of the above.
18. Where we sell
We sell worldwide, except to people who live in the European Union, the wider European Economic Area — which includes Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein — Switzerland, or the Canadian province of Quebec.
A buyer elsewhere may have a certificate emailed to somebody who lives in one of those places. We do not post printed certificates to an address in any of them.
We do not sell in Europe because each of those places requires an overseas seller to register for and account for local sales tax from the very first sale, with no minimum threshold. At our size that costs considerably more than the sales are worth. We do not sell in Quebec because the law there requires the site and its terms to be in French, and they are not. Neither is a judgement about anything, and we would rather decline the sale honestly than take your money and get it wrong.
Where we can tell where you are, checkout will tell you rather than let you get to the end and fail. This may change, and the change will be dated at the top of this page.
We also do not sell where United Kingdom law prevents us from doing so, including to any country or person subject to UK financial sanctions.
19. Delivery
Digital delivery. Your certificate is delivered by email to the address or addresses given at checkout. In the ordinary course it is sent straight away, unless you chose to keep your cancellation right, in which case it is sent when the 14 days in section 30 have passed, or unless we are looking at the order under section 26.
If it has not arrived within a day, check your spam folder and then email us. We can send it again for as long as we still hold it, which is the 60 days set out in section 5. After that your registration is unaffected and stays on the register, but the certificate itself has been deleted, so please keep the copy we send you.
Printed items. Every printed copy is checked by a person before it is posted. We aim to dispatch promptly. In any event we will deliver within 30 days of the day the contract is made, unless we have agreed a later date with you.
Ordering more copies later. Reply to your certificate email, or write to us quoting your order reference. If we no longer hold your certificate, attach the PDF from that email. Further copies are priced as a new posting to the address they go to, as shown on the website, and we will tell you how to pay.
If nobody is at the address, the item is left according to the postal service's ordinary practice. If it does not arrive, tell us and we will reprint and resend at no cost.
Import duty and customs charges on printed items. Printed certificates may be posted from the United Kingdom or produced elsewhere by a print partner. If yours crosses a border, the country it is sent to may charge import duty, sales tax or a customs handling fee before it will deliver the parcel. Those charges are set by that country's government and its carrier, not by us. We cannot predict them, we do not collect them and we receive no part of them, and they are payable by the person receiving the parcel.
Please be aware that the United States withdrew its low-value import exemption in 2025, so a charge is now possible there even on an inexpensive item.
If a parcel is refused or returned to us because an import charge was not paid, we will refund the price of the goods but not the postage.
20. Colour on a screen and colour on paper
Screens emit light. Paper reflects it. The two cannot be made to agree exactly, and no printer in the world can reproduce every colour a screen can show.
Your printed certificate will be a close match to what you saw, but very vivid colours read slightly softer on paper, and some of the most intense colours cannot be printed exactly at all. On a wavelength registration the difference is total rather than approximate, because the colour is outside the printable range altogether. In each case the printed sheet shows the closest available approximation.
We tell you this before you pay, because it is the single thing most likely to disappoint and we would rather you knew.
This is not a fault, and it is not a reason for a refund on its own. But section 27 gives you a free change of colour within 30 days if what arrived is not what you wanted, and that covers simply being unhappy with how it came out.
21. The name you choose
You choose the name. We put it on the certificate and we publish it, so there are limits on what it can be.
We will not register a name that:
(a) is abusive, obscene, hateful, or is an attempt to get such a name past our checks by spelling it differently;
(b) impersonates a real person, or uses a real person's name without their involvement — your own name, the name of somebody you are buying for, and the name of somebody you are remembering are of course fine;
(c) is somebody else's brand, trade mark or product name, unless it clearly refers to something of your own. "Bill's Ford Capri" is fine. "Ford Capri" is not;
(d) is a paint, ink or pigment manufacturer's own name for one of their colours;
(e) refers to a colour matching system or a code within one, such as a Pantone or RAL reference. We cannot print that, because it would be a promise of a match our printing cannot guarantee;
(f) is a character from a film, book, game or television programme;
(g) is protected by statute, such as Olympic or Red Cross wording;
(h) is longer than the site allows, or uses emoji or symbols that do not set properly on a certificate or in the register;
(i) or that we judge, for any other reason, we would rather not print and publish.
The same checks apply to the name it is registered to, the sender's name, and any words of your own.
Most of this is checked as you type, so you will normally know at once. Some of it we only see when a person looks at the order, which always happens before an entry is published or anything is printed.
21.1. Our final say on a name
Automatic checks catch the obvious. They do not catch everything, and they never will — the whole point of a name is that somebody thought of it.
So paragraph (i) above means what it says. The decision on whether we print and publish a name is ours, it is final, and we do not have to justify it. We may take it before your certificate is made or afterwards, and we may take it about a name that passed every automatic check. This is not a right we expect to use often, and it is not one we will use to be difficult. It exists because we are the ones putting the name in public, over our own name, and there has to be a point at which somebody decides.
What you get if we do. A full refund of everything you paid on that order — the registration, any fee for dropping the code, printing and postage — with nothing deducted and no fee of any kind. We refund to the card or account you paid from, and we do it as soon as we have made the decision rather than at the end of any period.
Where we can, we will offer you a different name first, free of charge, keeping your registration number, your date and your colours exactly as they are.
And what you do not get. Beyond that refund, or that free change if you prefer it, we are not liable to you for anything else arising from a name we decline: not the occasion you bought it for, not the disappointment, and not any cost you went to around it. We are declining to supply and giving your money back, not supplying something faulty.
Nothing in this section takes away a right the law gives you and does not let us remove. Section 31 sets out what happens if what we did supply is faulty or not as described, and this section does not touch it.
If your certificate had already reached you when we decide, we will not ask for it back. Section 23 explains why, and what a withdrawal does and does not reach.
By choosing a name you are confirming that, so far as you are aware, you are entitled to use it and it is not somebody else's to give. That is all you are taking on. You are not agreeing to cover our legal costs or anybody else's if it turns out otherwise. What happens instead is set out in section 23.
Registrations for businesses and organisations may be made under a separate agreement. Please ask.
22. Names without the code
A registered name is normally shown with a five-character code after it, such as Rosie's Autumn Gold (F2K9M). That code is what allows two people to register the same name without either being turned away.
For an additional fee you can drop the code, so that the name stands on its own. A name without a code is issued once and once only.
Only some names can have the code dropped:
(a) the name must be three words or more. One and two-word names are too broad to hand exclusively to whoever happens to type them first;
(b) it must not contain a brand, trade mark or product name, including one used with your own name in front of it;
(c) it must not contain a paint manufacturer's colour name, or an ordinary word that is also a well-known brand.
The reason is simple. A name with a code is plainly one entry among many. A name without one looks like an exclusive claim, and that is not something we are willing to sell over somebody else's name.
If we later withdraw a name under section 23, the fee you paid to drop the code is refunded in full along with everything else.
23. When we withdraw or change a name
We may withdraw a registered name if:
(a) it should not have passed the checks in section 21, and we have noticed;
(b) somebody with a genuine claim to it asks us to remove it;
(c) a court, a regulator or a payment provider requires us to; or
(d) it turns out to be a real person's name used without their involvement.
We will email you before we do anything, wherever we can, and we will tell you the reason in plain terms.
You then choose what happens next:
(i) A different name, free of charge. Your registration number, your date and your colours all stay exactly as they are. This does not use up the free change in section 27. If your certificate had already been printed, we print and post the replacement at no cost; or
(ii) A full refund of everything you paid on that order, including any fee for dropping the code, and including printing and postage.
If we do not hear from you within 30 days we will refund you rather than leave your registration unresolved.
What we cannot do is recall a certificate that is already in your hands. It is yours, we will not ask for it back, and we have no way of making you return it. A withdrawal removes the entry from the register, which is the part that is public.
This section is about names that should not be on the register. Misuse of a certificate is dealt with under section 26.
24. Reporting an entry
If you believe an entry on the register uses your name, your brand or something that belongs to you, tell us through the check page on our website, or email Support@InternationalColourRegistry.com with the registration number and an explanation of the problem.
When a report arrives, the names come off the public entry while we look into it, so that it shows its number only. That is free, reversible, and does not decide anything.
We would rather remove an entry than argue about it. We treat these as urgent, we act as quickly as we can, and we tell you what we have done.
This does not mean we will remove any entry on any request. Section 29 sets out when an entry is taken down at the request of the person who registered it.
25. Photographs
If you upload a photograph to appear on a certificate, you confirm that you own it or have permission to use it, and that everybody identifiable in it is content to appear. Please do not upload photographs of public figures, images taken from the internet, or anything you did not take yourself. Section 26 sets out what a photograph must never show.
You keep ownership of your photograph. You give us permission to use it only to produce and deliver your order, and to show the certificate on the check page to somebody who has both its registration number and order reference. We will not use it for advertising and we will not show it to anyone else.
We do not keep your photograph on its own. It exists only inside your certificate, and it is deleted with the certificate at the end of the 60 days set out in section 5. Please save the certificate we email you. After that, a further copy needs the PDF from your certificate email, and a change under section 27 needs the photograph sent to us again. Your registration itself is not affected and stays on the register.
We may refuse a photograph without giving a reason, in which case we refund you in full.
26. Using a certificate fairly
Almost everybody buys a certificate to please somebody. This section is for the rare exception, and it applies to every order.
What you agree to.
(a) Everybody shown in a photograph you use has agreed to appear, or you are otherwise entitled to use it. A photograph must not be altered to show a real person in a way they have not agreed to, including in swimwear, underwear or less.
(b) A certificate must not be used to deceive, harass, frighten, threaten or embarrass anybody, and must not claim to come from somebody who did not send it.
(c) The name you give as the sender is your own, or a name you are entitled to use.
Misuse may be a crime. Using a certificate in these ways may be a criminal offence, including harassment, sending threatening or false communications, and creating or sharing an intimate image of a real person without their consent — whether the image is real or faked.
What we may do. If we reasonably believe an order breaks this section we may refuse it, hold it without sending or printing anything until a person has looked at it, or cancel it. We may block an email address and a card from future orders; a later order from either is held until we have looked at it.
Refunds. If we cancel an order before anything has been sent, we refund it in full. If a certificate has already been delivered and is then misused, we do not refund it: we have supplied what was ordered, and the breach is not ours.
Somebody who has opted out. If the person a gift is addressed to has asked us never to send them anything, we do not send it, and we refund the order in full.
Checking and reporting. Anybody can check whether a certificate is genuine, and report misuse, through the check page on our website. As soon as a report arrives, before anybody has read it, we keep the order's records as evidence, take the names off the public entry, and send nothing more for that order. A person then reads every report. Each of those steps can be undone if a report turns out to be mistaken, and a report never deletes anything.
Records, and the police. We keep records of who paid for every order, as section 2 sets out. We give the records of an order to the police when they ask for them in connection with a crime, and to anybody a court orders us to give them to.
27. Changing your colour
If the colour is not what you expected on the screen or in the hand, tell us within 30 days and we will move your registration to a different colour, free of charge, once per registration. On a combination you may change any or all of its colours at the same time. You may change the name too, if it needs to change. Your registration number and your original date stay as they are.
The new colour or combination must be available, and section 11 applies to it in the same way as to an order.
The 30 days run from the day your registration is delivered, or — if you ordered anything printed — from the day the printed certificate reaches you, whichever is later. You should have the same time to think about it whether you are looking at a screen or at paper, and the paper takes longer to arrive.
If your certificate was printed, we print and post the replacement free as well, once, within the same 30 days. This covers being unhappy with how it came out, not only a fault.
The free change does not apply to colours sold at a premium price. A withdrawal under section 23 is not a change and never uses up this right.
28. More than one copy
Additional printed copies of the same certificate are charged at the extra-copy price shown on the website for the place they are posted to. It is a flat price rather than a fraction of the first, because the first print carries the cost of posting and a second sheet in the same envelope does not.
All copies of an order are printed together and sent together, in one envelope, to one address. Up to twelve copies go in one envelope. Above twelve, write to us and we will quote. We do not send part of an order early, we do not send proof copies, and we do not split an order between addresses.
If you cancel or return part of a multi-copy order, extra copies are refunded at the extra-copy price rather than the first-print price.
29. The public register
Once it has been checked, your entry appears on a public page that anyone can find: the name you chose, the colour or colours, the registration number, the date, and the name it is registered to. If you choose to show your words on the public entry, they appear on that page too; otherwise they do not. Words cannot be shown on an anonymous entry. Email addresses never appear, and neither do postal addresses.
Words of your own are shown on the entry page. They are never matched by a search of the register, so nobody can find an entry by searching for something written in them.
You may also choose, free of charge, to list a website address with your entry. If you do, it is shown as plain text on the entry page and it can be found by searching for it. It is not a link, and it does not appear on the certificate. Do not list an address you have no right to use. We may remove a listed address at any time, and removing one does not refund the registration, because the listing is included at no charge rather than sold.
Entry pages can be found through a search engine. That is deliberate. A register nobody can find from outside is not much of a register, and being able to search for a name and see the entry is what makes a certificate provable rather than merely printed. Words of your own are not part of the indexed page, and neither is any photograph.
You may choose, free of charge, to have your entry shown anonymously, when you order or at any time afterwards. The person an entry is registered to may ask for the same. The colour and its registration number stay on the register, because that is what makes an entry verifiable, but the name it is registered to does not appear on the public list and cannot be found by searching it. We continue to hold the registered owner against the entry so that we can find it on request. Anonymity governs what the public sees, not our own records.
If you want an entry removed from the public register altogether, write to us and we will remove it. Removing an entry does not refund it, and the colour or combination is not released for anybody else to register.
Write to Support@InternationalColourRegistry.com and give the registration number, which is on the entry page and on the certificate. If the entry is yours, write from the email address the order was placed with, or quote the order reference. If it is registered to you, say so. If it is somebody else's, tell us which entry it is, what the problem is, and what your connection to it is. We read every request and reply to it.
Anonymity and removal are complete. We keep no public copy of a name anywhere else.
30. Your right to cancel
You have the right to cancel this contract within 14 days without giving a reason. This section explains when that right applies, when it does not, and how to use it. Nothing in it affects your rights under section 31 if something is wrong.
30.1. The cancellation period
For digital items — the register entry and the emailed certificate — the period is 14 days from the day after the day the contract is made.
For printed certificates and boxed editions, the period is 14 days from the day after the day you, or somebody you have nominated, receive the goods.
30.2. Digital content: what the tick at checkout means
Before you pay, you are asked to give your express consent to us delivering your registration and certificate immediately, and to acknowledge that by doing so you lose your right to cancel once delivery has begun. That is a requirement of the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, and it is a real loss of a real right, which is why it is a separate tick and not part of the general agreement to these terms.
Your order confirmation email records that you gave that consent, and reaches you no later than the certificate itself.
If you would rather keep your cancellation right, do not tick it. We will hold your order for 14 days and deliver at the end of that period, and you keep the right to cancel throughout. Your colour and your name are reserved for you in the meantime.
30.3. Printed certificates: personalisation
A certificate carrying a name you chose, colours you picked and, if you added one, a photograph you supplied, is made to your specification and clearly personalised. The 2013 Regulations do not give a right to cancel goods of that kind, and we do not offer one, because there is nothing we can do with a certificate bearing somebody else's name.
This does not affect your rights if the item is faulty, damaged, not as described, or not what you ordered. Those rights are in section 31 and we cannot and do not exclude them.
30.4. How to cancel
Tell us before the period ends. An email to Support@InternationalColourRegistry.com is enough — just make it clear that you are cancelling. You may use the form at the end of these terms, but you do not have to.
30.5. What happens then
We refund everything you paid, including delivery, within 14 days of the day you told us. If goods were sent, we refund within 14 days of getting them back or of your proof of posting, whichever is sooner. Refunds go to the card or account you paid from. There is no fee.
Where goods have been sent, you must return them without undue delay and within 14 days of telling us. You pay the cost of return. You are responsible for any loss in value caused by handling the goods more than was necessary to see what they were.
31. If something is wrong
Your legal rights come from the Consumer Rights Act 2015. In summary:
- Goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. If they are not, you have a 30-day right to reject and get your money back, and after that a right to repair or replacement, and to a price reduction or a refund if that does not put it right.
- Digital content must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, and you are entitled to a repair, a replacement or a refund if it is not.
- Any service we supply must be carried out with reasonable care and skill.
Nothing in these terms limits or takes away any of that. If any part of these terms would have that effect, it does not apply.
In practice: if we fail to deliver what you paid for, tell us and we will put it right or refund you. If a printed certificate arrives damaged, badly printed or wrong, we reprint and repost it free, and we do not ask for the faulty one back.
32. Our responsibility for other losses
We are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable.
Where we are responsible for something other than the matters in section 31, our liability is limited to the amount you paid for the order concerned. That limit does not apply to anything in section 31.
We do not supply this product for business use, and we are not liable for loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption or loss of business opportunity.
We are not responsible for a colour looking different on a different screen or a different printer. We explain that in section 20, before you buy, and it is outside our control.
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
33. If you dispute a payment
If you do not recognise a charge, or you think something has gone wrong with a payment, please email us first. It is usually quicker than a bank dispute.
If you raise a chargeback with your bank we will cooperate with it fully and provide the evidence your bank asks for. Nothing in this section stops you going to your bank, and nothing here affects your rights under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 or under your card scheme's chargeback rules.
Where a payment is reversed or a chargeback succeeds, the corresponding register entry is withdrawn, because the registration has not been paid for.
34. Orders we will not accept
We may refuse an order, cancel a registration, or decline to deal with you, where we reasonably believe the site is being used to register in bulk for resale, to place orders by automated means, to copy the register wholesale, or to work a name past the checks in section 21. Where we cancel on that basis we refund in full.
Misuse of a certificate is dealt with under section 26.
The register is meant to be read one entry at a time and bought one entry at a time, by a person who has thought about it. That is the whole of what this section is protecting.
35. Circumstances outside our control
We are not liable for delay or failure caused by something outside our reasonable control, including postal strikes, supplier failure and network outages. If the delay is substantial you may cancel and be refunded in full for anything not yet delivered.
36. How long a registration lasts
No renewal. There is never a renewal fee, and there is nothing you need to do to keep a registration.
Never sold again. Your colour, combination or wavelength is never registered to anybody else. Even if your entry is removed from the public register, at your request or ours, it is not released for somebody else to buy.
For as long as we run the register. We keep every registration for as long as IDAS Ltd runs the register. No company can promise to last indefinitely, and we do not pretend to. If we ever stop, we will try to pass the register to somebody who will run it on these same terms.
Your certificate is yours. It records the colour, the name, who it is registered to, the registration number and the date, and it does not depend on this website. Please keep the copy we email you.
37. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. The version that applies to your order is the one published at the time you bought, and changes are dated at the top of this page. If a change affects a registration you already hold, we will email you.
38. Complaints and dispute resolution
Please email Support@InternationalColourRegistry.com. Tell us what happened and what you would like us to do. We reply as quickly as we can.
If we cannot resolve your complaint that way, we will write and tell you so, and tell you which approved alternative dispute resolution provider could handle it. Alternative dispute resolution is a way of settling a dispute without going to court. We are not a member of a scheme and we are not obliged to use one, but we will consider a request to.
You may take the matter to court instead. In the United Kingdom you can also get free, independent advice from Citizens Advice.
39. Law and where you can bring a claim
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.
If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you may bring proceedings in your own country.
If you live in the United States, Canada or Australia, nothing in these terms removes a consumer right your own law says cannot be removed. You keep the mandatory consumer protections of the country, state, province or territory where you live, and you may bring proceedings in its courts. The annexes at the end of this document set out what that means in the places where something specific needs saying.
The same applies anywhere else. If you buy from a country whose law gives consumers protections that cannot be contracted out of, this section does not take them away from you.
40. General
If any part of these terms is found to be unlawful or unenforceable, the rest continues to apply.
If we do not insist on something straight away, that does not stop us insisting on it later.
This contract is between you and us. Nobody else has any rights under it.
We may transfer our rights and obligations under these terms to another organisation, including somebody who takes over the register under section 36, and we will tell you if we do. Your rights are not affected.

Schedule — model cancellation form
You only need to use this form if you want to. An email saying you are cancelling is equally valid.

Support@InternationalColourRegistry.comI hereby give notice that I cancel my contract of sale of the following goods / for the supply of the following service:
Ordered on / received on: ......................................................
Order or registration reference: ...........................................
Name of consumer: ..............................................................
Address of consumer: ..........................................................
..........................................................................................
Signature (only if sending on paper): ...................................
Date: ..............................................................................
Annexes by country
These annexes form part of these terms. Each applies only where it says it does. Where an annex differs from the sections above, the annex applies to you.
An annex applies according to where you live, not according to which version of the site you happened to be looking at.
Annex A — Australia
Applies if you live in Australia.
A1. Consumer guarantees. Our goods and services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. For major failures with the service, you are entitled:
- to cancel your service contract with us; and
- to a refund for the unused portion, or to compensation for its reduced value.
You are also entitled to choose a refund or replacement for major failures with goods. If a failure with the goods or a service does not amount to a major failure, you are entitled to have the failure rectified in a reasonable time. If this is not done, you are entitled to a refund for the goods and to cancel the contract for the service and obtain a refund of any unused portion. You are also entitled to be compensated for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage from a failure in the goods or service.
A2. Our reprint promise is a warranty against defects. Section 31 promises that a printed certificate arriving damaged, badly printed or wrong is reprinted and reposted free, and that we do not ask for the faulty one back. That promise is in addition to your rights under A1 and does not limit them.
To claim it, email Support@InternationalColourRegistry.com within a reasonable time, describing the problem. A photograph helps but is not required. We bear the cost of the claim, including postage of the replacement.
IDAS Ltd, 92 Cobden Avenue, Southampton, SO18 1FS, United Kingdom. Support@InternationalColourRegistry.com
A3. Limitation. Section 32 does not apply to anything in A1. Where we may lawfully limit liability, our liability is limited at our option to resupplying the goods or service, or paying the cost of doing so.
A4. Where you can sue. Notwithstanding section 39, you may bring proceedings in the courts of your own State or Territory, and the Australian Consumer Law applies to the extent it gives you rights that cannot be excluded.
Annex B — United States
Applies if you live in the United States.
B1. Cancellation. There is no general federal right to cancel an online purchase. We give you the 14-day right in section 30 anyway, on the same terms and with the same exceptions, because we would rather offer it than argue about it. It is a right we choose to give, not one the law requires of us, and it does not limit any right your own State gives you.
B2. Sales tax. Any State or local sales tax that we are required to collect is included in the price you see. Where no tax is charged, your State may still require you to account for use tax. That is a matter between you and your State.
B3. Import charges. Since the low-value import exemption was withdrawn in 2025, US Customs may charge duty and the carrier may charge a handling fee before delivering a parcel sent from abroad, however inexpensive the item. Those charges are not set by us and we receive no part of them. Section 19 explains what happens if a parcel is refused.
B4. State privacy rights. If you live in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia or another State with a comprehensive privacy law, you have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to have it deleted, to correct it, and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We do not sell or share personal information and we do not use it for targeted advertising. To exercise any of these rights, email Support@InternationalColourRegistry.com. We will not treat you any differently for asking.
B5. Disputes. We do not require arbitration and there is no class action waiver in these terms. You may bring a claim in your own State's courts, and section 39 does not prevent you.
End of terms.
