Anything you like: a nickname, a place, a memory. We suggest a name from theirs to start you off. Change it as much as you like.

Names that start with a brand, such as ‘Ferrari Red’ (‘Sam’s Ferrari Red’, with an apostrophe, is acceptable, though it always keeps its code). Anything that could be considered rude or deeply insulting.

No, they are optional, and printed only if you tick the box. The arrows offer ideas, and the menu beside them chooses who they are for. Change them as much as you like.

Usually not. It will be close, and for most colours very close. But screen quality and settings vary considerably. Also, screens make colour by emitting light, and paper makes it by reflecting light — so print can’t quite reach the most electric shades. Deep, soft and earthy colours print very close; neon-bright ones come out a little gentler.

Your unique hex colour code(s) are the record either way. The print is its physical form, not a replacement for it.

You are, of course, welcome to print your certificate yourself. For those wishing for a more professional certificate, we also offer a professional printing service on colour-managed quality paper. It gives the closest match possible to the colour code(s) used, within the physical differences between screen colours and paper colours described above.

You can’t pick one by accident. The wheel will not come to rest on a shade that has been taken or reserved — land on one and it moves to the nearest free shade automatically, by an amount no eye could detect.

If you type in a shade that has gone, we tell you and move it one step. If the wheel settles there, it’s fine.

The person the colour is for. Their name is printed on the certificate and shown on the public register — or you can keep the entry anonymous at checkout.

16,777,216. We register each value or set of values once and once only. You will be the unique holder of that shade or combination of shades.*

*Please be aware that an already registered shade can later be included in a pair or set of colours; it is the single colour or the combination of colours that is always unique to you.

Yes. There are eight pure colours, the corners of the colour cube, where every channel is either full or off: black, white, red, green, blue, cyan, magenta and yellow. The wheel and the photo picker never land exactly on one, so to choose one, type its code into colour 1: FF0000 (or 255,0,0) for red, 00FF00 for green, 0000FF for blue, 00FFFF for cyan, FF00FF for magenta, FFFF00 for yellow or FFFFFF for white. Pure black is already registered.

A pure colour is registered on its own, never as part of a combination, and each is priced individually: see Prices. Red, green, blue, cyan and magenta at full strength are beyond any printer, so a printed certificate shows them as closely as our paper and professional printer allow.

No, this is a novelty gift and a public registry that we maintain. It carries no legal or scientific standing, and it doesn’t affect trademarks, Pantone references or anything else. What it is: a searchable public record with their name on it, and a lovely certificate. The entry can be anonymous, if preferred.

Every registration carries its colour’s own code: six characters, such as C6DBF1, or two or three of them for a combination. No two registrations have the same code, so it makes every entry unique — two people can both choose Rosie’s Autumn Gold and each has their own (see the next question). At checkout you can pay to drop the code and hold the bare name instead, if the name has three words or more and nobody has taken it. Only one person can drop the code for any given name, so it goes to whoever asks first.

Yes, and that’s deliberate. Every registration is identified by its colour’s code — so one shade might be Rosie’s Autumn Gold (C9A227) and another Rosie’s Autumn Gold (B8862B), and one single Rosie’s Autumn Gold with no code visible. The code is what’s unique; the name is yours to choose freely. It means you’re never told the name you wanted has gone.

If this is important to you, longer names are far more likely to be unique. Rosie’s Sunny Autumn Gold is much more likely to be the only one than Rosie’s Autumn Gold.

We understand. Simply tell us within 30 days and we’ll move the registration to a different colour or colours, free of charge. The name can change too if required. Changes subject to availability. Once per registration.

Absolutely, it’s a lovely tribute. If you’d like the certificate worded differently or sent to multiple people, contact us after ordering and we’ll assist however we can at no extra charge.

Asking for an entry to be removed

Write to Support@InternationalColourRegistry.com and tell us the registration number — it is on the entry page and on the certificate.

If the entry is yours, send the message from the email address the order was placed with, or quote the order reference. We will take it off the public register. Removing an entry does not refund it, and the colour is not released for anybody else to register.

If it is somebody else’s, tell us which entry and what the problem is — a name that should not be there, a trade mark, or anything else. Say who you are and what your connection is. We read every one and reply.

Removing an entry takes it off the public register. It does not erase the fact that a registration was made, because our accounts and our own records have to be kept. Nothing about a removed entry appears in this database or in a search.
